Perfect for making demo tapes, 4 track cassette recorders are low cost, yet still offer great sound fidelity. Using a standard music cassette tape, they are able to record on all four channels at once, unlike standard cassette recorders, which normally record in two channels on one side of the tape, and two channels on the other. Most 4 track cassette players have separate level meters so that you can adjust the sound level for each channel separately. Another nice feature is the ability to record two tracks at a time, and then mix them down to one track. Repeating this process you can mix an unlimited number of tracks down to just two for release on CD. Keep in mid, though, that unlike digital recorders, each time you mix downm you will be adding more hiss to the overall mix. Some models also allow you to plug in a high impedance device like a guitar directly into the recorder without running the risk of overload. We recommend that you use high quality chrome cassettes (like those made by Maxell) to minimize hiss and to make the best possible recording. Since these recorders record on all four tracks you cannot flip the the cassette over to side B. To make it easier on yourself, get used to recording on side A for every tape since then you won't have to figure out which side the music is on. We offer high quality four track recorders by Tascam, Korg and Fostek. For our money, the Tascam 414mkII is the best value, however, if you can afford it, you should seriously consdier a digital recording setup which will vastly improve the quality of the recorded sound, as well as allow nearly limitless mixdowns without adding significant amounts of hiss and distortion.
