12 String Electric Guitars
Playing a twelve string electric guitar can be quite a thrill. Like 12 string acoustic guitars, they can be a bit difficult to play well, and to keep in tune. The sounds you get are typically brighter than a six string, and give it a kind of twang that is popular with country music artists. In the 1970s, Jimmy Page of the hard rock band "Led Zeppelin" popularized the use of 12 string electric guitars in modern rock with the tune Dazed And Confused. When just starting out, you will find it difficult to play a twelve string in a lead guitar role. In fact most song applications call for using one for rythmm guitar only. On 12 string guitars, the paired strings are tuned a complete octave apart, but some artists use alternate tunings, and some even drop the second string on the higher octave notes. Because of the additional tension put on the neck due to the extra strings, inexpensive 12 string guitars sometimes end up with warped necks. The better ones have reinforced heavy duty steel rods to minimize this tendency. Another way to minimize warpage is to tune the guitar to a low C rather than the typical E tuning. Another consideration for buying a 12 string is the fact you will go through guitar strings at twice the rate of your standard six string. Rickenbaker and Epiphone are the two top brands we offer.
