My first one was an old Ampeg V2 which used tubes. This amp had all of the wonderful nuanced tones you get from tubes but was a little persnickety when it came to actually working. Sometime the tubes would overheat, effectively shutting down the map. You also had to be very careful when it came to moving this amp around so that the tubes would not break. Putting up with all of this was worth it though, as it couild make guitars sound reminiscent of the first Led Zeppelin album (Led 1). Nowadays, almost all Ampeg amps are solid state and are much more reliable than the old tube amps. Ampeg combo amps have both the speaker and the amp in a single cabinet. Ampeg amplifiers can also be purchased as separate heads (amps) and separate speaker cabinets. A single head and amp is usually called a half stack. The better Ampeg heads have two outputs which can be hooked up to two different speaker cabinets (typically stacked atop one another). This configuration is called a full stack. Ampeg also makes a full line of bass guitar amplifiers. You may also want to see our complete list of available Ampeg amps and music gear. Can't Find It?
